    Canned chicken

Just got done killing, cleaning, de boning, and canning a BUNCH of chicken. Ended up with 250 pint jars, and a bunch of drum sticks, breasts, tenderloins and wings in the freezer. We are good for a while on chicken meat.

Filled this 150 quart ice chest 3 times.

    Huge breasts.

    Yummy

    how many chickens?
    raised yourself?
what do jars cost down there?
cost factor... chicklets, feed, etc= how much per chicken/how much per jar?

    btw... Awesome!

I think the requirement is there. sit down, and write us the story. I could use a reminder.

I know the butchering aspect, but BP doesn't. He knows the upfront stuff, but I don't.

    Start at the beginning, please

Btw... that wall is awesome! Most of my reserves go into barrels, so it doesn't have the same wow factor as that wall.

    Great job, my friend!

    About 90 broilers
    Yes raised them ourselves.
I don't know what the jars cost, we got a BUNCH for free years ago. Probably about 400 of them.
Cost is expensive. At the end, they where eating a 16 dollar bag each day, so this is not saving any money. Cost a lot more than just buying the meat. But the meat is free of all the garbage that might be in store bought stuff. We paid 2-3 dollars per chicken from a lady that's daughter does 4H, and as she culls them she sells the culls to us. So we got the first batch of 25 they weighed about 5 lbs each, then the second batch of 50 or so weighed about 10lbs when we go them. The last batch of weighted between 15 and 20lbs each.

3 days of killing and cleaning. We started canning 9 jars at a time on the first day. Takes about 30 minutes for the pressure to come up, then 75 minutes cooking, then it takes about 30 minutes for the pressure to drop so you can open it. On the 3rd day I was done de boning the meat but it took us 5 days total to finish canning. We bought a bigger canner on the 3rd day, so now we can do 20 jars at a time instead of 9.

My wife built the wall, the pint size jars fit on the top, but the bottom shelves are for quart size jars. She wants to build some kind of door to keep the dust down. It really sucks doing all this work, but for a year we have great meat that is very easy to serve. If I missed something yall have a question about, let me know.

Wait...I’m confused...I thought all chicken came from Walmart.
